Riya Gupta-Animation Design

Hello CEED and NID aspirants!

In this post,i will tell you the basic key points to remember before starting with the animation question. Friends, you might have heard the following anomalies regarding an animation question:
  • Time taking
  • Too lengthy
  • Too much detailing needed
The main challenge which make the students skip the animation question is time management.Friends,if you follow these effective points which i have explained below, you will complete the question and in a very attractive manner too !

An animation question includes various sub tasks to perform like:
  • MAKING FRAMES
  • CREATING THE MAIN CHARACTERS
  • BACKGROUND
  • EXCLAMATORY CAPTIONS
  • ADDING PERSPECTIVE
  • COLORING(IF TIME LEFT)
let me clear you these points separately,

1. Making frames

While making the frames don't go with very small sized frames untill and unless you are asked to make 8-10+ frames.Small frames tend to make your story too messy as you will make the main characters small and comparatively the background .Also while erasing the work inside the frame will tend to rub the frame also.
Tip:Don't go with the boring equal sized frames .You can make the frames of smaller and bigger size ,arrange them attractively.this will give your answer "Stand out of others".
Take a look at the example below-

So,its better to make ideal sized frames.neither too small, nor too big.

2. Creating the main characters (such that they stand out of the whole)

While creating your main character, don't go with too much detailing.Students waste their time making some very unnecessary minute details like the character fanciful clothes, accessories, too much expressions, shading, etc.

You only need to concentrate on the action told in the question.

3. Background

The biggest mistake students do is detailing the background.Yes! this is what eating your precious time.Students just make the background as fanciful as they can.but the fact is,it diverts the observer from the main character!

take a look at the image below:

The focus should be on the main character ,but the background is too much detailed such that the observer will get easily confused.
The correct background making should be like this :

I think now you clearly got what i was trying to explain.:)

4. Exclamatory captions

The captions always completes your storyboard.it grabs the attention of the observer and if your sketch is not to that level also, trust me ,it compensates it !
look at the storyboard below, the captions like "swoosh","whamm" are clearly grabbing our attention and making it a real storyboard !

5. Adding perspective

Adding perspective is a very important thing to remember,as it makes the storyboard to look real and attention grabbing.you can make bird's eye view or insect's eye view. These views are commonly used while storyboarding by professionals.

Take a look at both the views:

BIRD'S EYE VIEW

INSECT'S EYE VIEW

6. Coloring(if time left)
Your pencil is enough for a storyboard, but if you get a couple of minutes more, you can color your main character or whole storyboard depending upon the time remaining. You can also use monochromatic coloring to the secondary characters/background to focus the main character.

Note:
Some students are comfortable with a pen rather than a pencil,if you are one of them, use pen in the exam.there is no restriction with the stationary you use.Keep in mind of the pens you use ,use a good quality of pens that doesn't stain.

Friends, start with the previous year questions and try to complete them in the time fold given. Practice daily with these questions, read comic strips which come across various newspapers/magazines,learn from web resources, etc. At last you will see the difference in you ,trust me!you can even complete the question before time!

In the next post, i will be showing you my solution to animation questions. till then, keep practicing !

Answer to CEED 2015 by Dhananjay Pande

The image below is my rough sketch for the question no. 1 , the question was really straightforward but i got carried away with its simplicity and started sketching without going into details of the question . As you can see in the diagram , i made two terrible mistake , first i placed a kadhai instead of pressure cooker and i have a four stove burner ,instead of a two stove burner . Please pay attention ,i learnt it the hard way .

Question no.2 .

I couldn't get my head around this one , i just couldn't may be it was because of the pressure that i felt after ,my failed attempt at question 1.

Question no.3

Objects that created
1. Merry-go-round.
2. A lounging chair.
3. A soap and toothbrush holder.

Question no. 4 .

Again I couldn't crack it , so instead of mulling over it i jumped to the next question , and mind you and i never got the chance to revisit those question that i couldn't crack .

Question no.5 .

This is not my first and the final attempt , i gone through 3 rough sketches , the last one looked more or less like this , and i thought this is going to be my final sketch so i send that pic to Bhanu Sir and he told me it still looks rough .
after Bhanu Sir's input , i decided to make it look more finished .
So my point is , before finalising your sketch , make at least , 4 to 5 rough sketches very quickly , thinking inn over head will only make the process even more slower and hence time consuming , and with quick rough sketches , you will get instant feedback from your brain if something is going wrong or can be added .

NOTE : Please give me your feedback , this is my first attempt at posting something on my own , that previous post was done by Bhanu Sir on my behalf (thank you sir). [I thought the process to post your own blog was very difficult , untill i tried ].

Answers to CEED 2013 by Dhananjay Pande

Hi all,

This is Dhananjay Pande again,

In this page my response to CEED 2013 previous paper Part B (design part) has been updated along with my sketches. Please do check and comment for any suggestions or improvements.

My sketch to Q1

My solution to Q2

  1. After welding two pieces of iron together , the mark of the welding doesn't look pleasing, it would look better with it being invisible.
  2. The nut bolts used to joint parts does not look good , making them invisible would look better, though that would play difficult for the engineers to repair.
  3. be relaxing .
  4. Women take time to get ready, most of it is consumed in pinning the saree pallu , so that it doesn't show, an invisible pin will save a lot of time.
  5. There is nothing more aggravating for a book lover , than getting his books all twisted and stained return back after borrowing it , lets make them invisible.

Please note that the question also look for humor in your answer, so I have taken more consideration of the creativity and the humor in my instances.

My solution to Q3

  1. The distinction between the cash counter and the waiting table counter should be well labeled.
  2. The white board between the mandir and the photo frame does look aesthetically pleasing, and can be seen as disrespect to the god .
  3. The colour combination of the cash counter and the waiting table , does not go well together , red and brown is not a good choice.
  4. The cold drink refrigerator seems hidden in the corner , it should placed between the two counters .
  5. The menu chart shouldn't have a shiny polished surface , the reflection of the light making the item obscure , a matt finish is desirable.
My solution to Optional part (Visual Communication)
